1

Have patience and compassion. It is very important to have patience when working with clients and their family members. Having the heart to do this job.

2

Pay attention to details. When working with clients you want to make sure that you pay close attention to what your client is saying, and how they are behaving, especially if there are cognitive issues. If a client lives with family members, be sure to observe the interactions between clients and family members. Understand medical terminology. As a Certified Nurse Assistant, it is very important to learn and understand medical terminology. Examples of common medical terminology: Respiration (lungs), Cardiac (heart), and Aspirate (withdrawing of fluid, tissue or other substance, or the accidental swallowing of fluid or food in the lungs). Good verbal recall and understanding of medical terminology assists with the ability to convey medical information to nurses and even doctors on occasion, which is very important. Be a good listener. Remember that we are working with human beings. Therefore, it is imperative that you actively listen. As your client expresses his/her needs. Keep in mind that they may have something important they need to share, no matter how long it takes for them to tell you. Active listening makes your client feel important.
